Course Objective

Module 1: Understanding Sustainability (1 Full Day) This module will provide fundamental information and knowledge of what is ‘sustainability,’ and what it means for businesses.
Module 2: Sustainability Toolkit – Byte Size Implementation for Organisational Sustainability Initiative (1 Full Day) In this module, attendees will be provided with a summary of concepts of sustainability and global gold standards for implementing Sustainability and/ or Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). Attendees will also explore Sustainability toolkit in four ways.

Course Outline

Module 1: Define and understand the term ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Environmental, Social, and Governance’ (ESG) – Determine the importance of Sustainability in a local and global context – Identify how Sustainability is practiced in various sectors – Examine the various regulatory requirements in improving Sustainability
Module 2: Understand the concepts on Sustainability and ESG – Gauge the extent of consultation and scale of implementation of the initiative to examine the readiness of a company to embark on Sustainability initiative – Propose an implementation plan for their organisation, including strategic vision setting, consultation, implementation and criteria of success – Determine the characteristics for an effective internal and external communications plan

Target Audience

Any management or supervisory level staff can attend. Upon completion a Certificate of Achievement will be jointly issued by James Cook Institute and SNEF to participants

May Tan – Mullins (Tan Poh Mui)

Professor May Tan-Mullins became Dean International, James Cook University on the 1 Sept 2021. She oversees the Sustainability training for JCUS’ wholly-owned subsidiary, James Cook Institute. She was the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Director of multiple CEEC think tanks in China. She worked in Durham University, UK and National University of Singapore. In addition, she is a recipient of the esteemed Camellia Friendship Award from the Ningbo government, China, in 2018 and the Westlake Friendship Award from Zhejiang provincial government, China, in 2021. May Tan-Mullins’s research interests are political ecology of rising China, environmental and energy justice, poverty alleviation and building resilience for the poorest and most vulnerable in the Tropics. Based on her expertise in various international development and human security issues, she was a consultant for the UNDP, National Bureau of Asian Research (US), Revenue Watch Institute (US) and the Chinese government. Professor May Tan-Mullins was also awarded the prestigious global Rockefeller Bellagio writing residency in Bellagio Centre, Lake Como in Italy. Some of her most current research projects is with the University of Nottingham UK and University of Philippines on ‘Poverty Alleviation in Post Typhoon Yolanda’ awarded by ESRC-DFID (2015-2018) and another project by the Research Council of Norway on the topic of ‘Roads to Power? The Political Effects of Infrastructure Projects in Asia (2022-2024). She has conducted extensive training for senior leaders of Chinese enterprises on Environmental and Social Governance (ESG). and risk mitigation strategies for Belt and Road Initiative projects. Senior leadership experience: Extensive senior leadership and administrative experiences in the Transnational Higher Education Sector of United Kingdom, China, Singapore, Australia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. She is currently part of the senior leadership team in James Cook University Singapore, leading the university on Global Engagement and OneJCU Strategy. This includes domestic and international recruitment, global partnerships, government and industry relations, fund raising and alumni relations. She is also the Chief Sustainability Officer for the University. Her past experiences include areas of programme and teaching quality, research, student experiences, staff development and core strategies such as EDI and Sustainability.
